about

As my journey as a musician has gone through many changes in the last 5 years, I have found myself going from saxophonist, to pianist, to composer, and finally, to musician. What do I mean by that? I realized that under all these labels we give ourselves, at the core, we are just musicians. So why not keep it that way? Spending time in New York City, I found that because of the competitive atmosphere and the constant fight to be the best in order to secure and retain one's gigs/work, we place a big emphasis on only highlighting what we can do on our instruments. As a result, the music we put out for sale mainly showcases our instrumental ability. There is nothing wrong with this, but I personally believe there is no point in doing this. Why be a saxophonist when I can just be a musician? In this album, each song is composed with no intention of highlighting my ability on the saxophone. Instead, I highlight the culmination of the compositions, the sounds, and the band as one unit. When I compose, I put down what I hear in my head. If I don't hear a suitable place for a saxophone solo, why should I force one in order to showcase my ability? I believe this is where we as musicians go wrong in our music. Why even give the saxophone the first melody if I don't hear that happening in my head? Music is a collective, not an individual. While saxophone is my main instrument, I believe I spent more time using synthesizers during the album's production in order to fully achieve the sounds I heard in my head. And while I gave the band a basic blueprint, I left them plenty of room for the freedom to play the sounds they heard in their heads. Therefore, I challenge the listener to enjoy the sounds of the collective rather than the sounds of a soloist plus a backing band.
